Elon Musk did not invent Dogecoin, did not write Core, and did not inscribe Shibescription #0. What he did, from 2019 through the mid-2020s, was become the largest public amplifier the joke ever had: honorary “CEO” for a day, a years-long tweet tape, Saturday Night Live’s “Dogefather” and a Wario fat-suit, Tesla merch that actually took DOGE, a CubeSat paid in the coin, and a civil case that asked a Manhattan judge to treat all of that as a pump. The judge said no reasonable investor could. This page is the record, not a fan club.
What he is in this encyclopedia
Musk is a person page because the 2021 tape is otherwise unintelligible. Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer made a chain. Atsuko Satō photographed Kabosu. Musk, years later, pointed a very large account at the ticker until newspapers treated his jokes as market structure. That is a historical fact. It is not a protocol fact. Dogecoin Core does not care who hosted Weekend Update.
He is not a Doginals voice. He did not ship an indexer. He is not Doge Soft. The inscription era inherited his liquidity hangover and almost none of his jokes. Read the 2021 boom for the carnival in one sitting; this page is the Musk file inside it.
What people confuse
| Misconception | Record |
|---|---|
| Musk founded Dogecoin | Launch is 6 December 2013. Founders are Markus and Palmer. Musk’s first dated public warmth is 2 April 2019. |
| The SEC fined him for Dogecoin tweets | The $20 million + $20 million 2018 SEC settlement is Tesla take-private (“funding secured”). There is no SEC Dogecoin fine in the public record this site cites. |
| SNL was only the Dogefather bit | 8 May 2021 also put him in a yellow-and-purple Wario fat-suit on trial for Mario’s murder. He later tweeted that Wario was his favourite sketch. The chart cared about “it’s a hustle.” The memes kept the mustache. |
| Tesla takes DOGE for cars | Merchandise checkout accepted DOGE from 14 January 2022. Vehicle payments were teased (“at some point”) in March 2024 at Giga Berlin. As of this review, cars are not a sourced DOGE till. |
| Floki the puppy is Dogecoin | 4 October 2021’s “Floki Frunkpuppy” moved SHIB harder than DOGE. Different ticker. Same Shiba face, different joke. |
| Department of Government Efficiency is the coin | The 2024–2025 U.S. government nickname collides with the ticker. It is a homonym that moved the chart. It is not Core, not Doginals, not a mint. |
| DOGE-1 went to the moon in 2022 | Musk announced it 9 May 2021. Geometric Energy’s FCC experimental packet exists. Launch slipped from IM-1 to later rideshares. As of 17 September 2026 it is still listed as unflown. |
2018–2019: scambots, then honorary CEO
The first Musk–Dogecoin contact that journalism can date is not a pump. It is a nuisance. Impersonation accounts were running fake crypto giveaways in his replies. On 17 September 2018 Palmer publicly offered a small Python script he said he already ran: regex the scam, block, report, watch Twitter shut the account. CNET recorded that Musk replied “OK” by DM and said he would talk to Twitter. That is the archive’s first handshake: a founder who had already left the coin, helping a celebrity with bots.
On 1 April 2019 the official Dogecoin account ran a joke poll for “CEO.” Voters picked Musk. On 2 April he accepted in public: “Dogecoin might be my fav cryptocurrency. It’s pretty cool.” He put “CEO of Dogecoin,” then “Former CEO of Dogecoin,” in the bio. Decrypt later treated the week as the start of a price gravity that was still a rounding error next to 2021 — Huobi listing, a market cap journalists put around $400 million — but the gag is the point. A coin with a stated culture of “no leaders” now had a billionaire playing mayor.
Ross Nicoll, one of the volunteer Core people still touching the repo after the founders left, told Decrypt that Musk had been in the developers’ DMs since that honorary-CEO week: advice on throughput, a Rolodex, an offer to fund them that they declined. The 2021 tweet “Working with Doge devs…” was not a first meeting. It was the first time the meeting was a market event.
The tweet tape and the chart
From late 2020 the jokes get a second job. Contemporaneous market desks started publishing five-minute and one-day moves next to single posts. This site does not treat those percentages as physics. It treats them as the public record of how the tape was narrated. As-of windows belong to the cited desk, not to a 2026 encyclopedia pretending it has a Bloomberg terminal.
| Date | Act | How the desks told it |
|---|---|---|
| 20 Dec 2020 | “One word: Doge” | Decrypt and others: an immediate double-digit pop from a leftover-penny coin. |
| 25 Dec 2020 | Doge-branded shorts / logo posts (later listed in the 2022 complaint) | The civil complaint treats Christmas 2020 as another step on the same staircase. |
| 4 Feb 2021 | “Doge”; “Dogecoin is the people’s crypto”; Lion King / Rafiki meme (“ur welcome”) | The image cleared a million likes. Same-day rallies in the 50–60% class were widely printed. |
| Feb 2021 | “Who let the Doge out”; Earth-currency poll (Doge vs all other crypto) | 2.4 million votes in the poll story; 71% for the moon option. |
| 1 Apr 2021 | “SpaceX is going to put a literal Dogecoin on the literal moon” | April Fool texture; the later DOGE-1 announcement is the version with a contractor. |
| 14 Apr 2021 | “Doge Barking at the Moon” (artwork of the dog and a moon) | The 2022 complaint flags the moon idiom. Desks printed another sharp lift. |
| 28 Apr 2021 | “The Dogefather. SNL May 8.” | Decrypt: about 15% on the announcement, then a march toward the May high. |
| 8 May 2021 | SNL airs; ATH then crash | Peak near $0.73–$0.74 and a 30–36% drawdown during/after the show. |
| 9–13 May 2021 | DOGE-1 tweet; Tesla-accept-Doge poll; “Working with Doge devs…” | Partial bounce. Palmer’s deleted “grifter” tweet lands in this window. |
| 14 Jan 2022 | “Tesla merch buyable with Dogecoin” | ABC: roughly 10% the day checkout buttons appeared. |
| 13 Feb 2023 | Super Bowl LVII: Dogecoin cowboy shirt; reply “Dogecoin” next to Rupert Murdoch | A smaller 5%-class blip. The shirt is the picture. |
| 3 Apr 2023 | Twitter’s bird replaced, for some clients, with Kabosu’s Shiba | CNBC: more than 30%. The later complaint alleged a large sale after the stunt; the judge still dismissed the case. |
Two other 2021 objects belong on the same shelf. Mark Cuban’s Dallas Mavericks began taking DOGE for tickets and merch in March 2021 — “because we can.” That is Cuban’s stunt, not Musk’s, but it is the same season: celebrities treating the ticker as a toy that clears. And Tesla’s Bitcoin treasury and later BTC-payments reversal (May 2021, energy) sat in the same week as the “working with Doge devs” line. The desks heard a rotation. Core heard a celebrity in the group chat.

8 May 2021: the Dogefather, Wario, and the dump
NBC’s Saturday Night Live, season 46 episode 18, is the folklore peak. Musk hosted. Mother’s Day weekend. In the monologue he gave his mother Dogecoin. On Weekend Update he sat as “financial expert” Lloyd Ostertag. Michael Che and Colin Jost asked what Dogecoin is until the bit ate itself. Musk offered the future-of-currency speech, then, when Che said “so it’s a hustle,” answered “Yeah, it’s a hustle.” He howled “To the moon.” The official clip is still on the show’s YouTube as “Weekend Update: Financial Expert Lloyd Ostertag on Cryptocurrency.”
The other costume from that night is the one this encyclopedia painted: Wario. Musk in a neon-yellow-and-purple fat-suit, zigzag mustache glued on, on trial for Mario’s murder after a Mario Kart banana. Grimes cameo as Princess Peach. Pete Davidson crashing in as Andrew Cuomo. Rolling Stone and The Verge treated it as the visual of the episode. The next morning Musk posted “Wario was my fav haha.” Vulture, unkindly and usefully, called the image “weaponized nothingness”: a billionaire proving he could look ridiculous and still be the story. The chart did not wait for the mustache. It dumped on the hustle line.
Reuters: DOGE quoted as low as $0.416 on Binance, down 36% from about $0.65 before the show, then a partial retrace toward $0.57 on Sunday. CNBC: as much as 29.5% down to $0.49 during the broadcast; Robinhood’s crypto rail faulted under the sell. Bloomberg/CoinGecko: above $0.73 Saturday, $0.4601 by Sunday morning in New York, a 35% 24-hour decline. Decrypt, hours before air, had already printed $0.73 and a ~$95 billion cap. The buy-the-rumor, sell-the-show pattern is not a law. It is what that weekend looked like on a screen.
Tesla merch, a bird that became a dog, a Super Bowl shirt
In December 2021 Musk said Tesla merchandise would take Dogecoin. On 14 January 2022 the checkout was live. Tesla’s own warning, printed at the time: non-DOGE crypto sent to those addresses would not be returned. That is the only sourced Tesla commerce this page treats as shipped. The merch rail later vanished from some storefronts without a press release; on 31 August 2024, after the lawsuit’s dismissal, Musk replied “Me” to a prompt about bringing DOGE merch payments back. As of 17 September 2026 this encyclopedia does not claim a continuous checkout. It claims a 2022 on-date and a later maybe.
On 13 March 2024 at Giga Berlin, asked when you could buy a Tesla with Dogecoin, he said “at some point, I think we should enable that,” then “Dogecoin to the moon.” He also gave a factory-floor origin story: line workers at Tesla and SpaceX asking him to support Doge while “lots of rich people were supporting bitcoin.” Treat the anecdote as his telling. Treat the vehicle till as unshipped.
3 April 2023 is the other visual stunt. After Musk bought Twitter, some clients and the marketing site showed Kabosu’s Shiba where the blue bird had been. CNBC put the coin up more than 30% that Monday. The 2023 amended complaint in 22-cv-05037 alleged that Musk sold on the order of $124 million of DOGE after the swap. The August 2024 dismissal still called the underlying statements puffery and the manipulation theory unintelligible. Allegation is not a finding. The logo swap happened. The print of the pop happened. The sale is what plaintiffs said.
Super Bowl LVII, 12 February 2023, State Farm Stadium: Musk in a Dogecoin “rodeo cowboy” Shiba shirt, seated near Rupert Murdoch. Asked — in a prompt that requested wrong answers — what they were talking about, he replied “Dogecoin.” A small pop, then a fade. The archive keeps the shirt because it is how the 2023 coin still travelled: not a whitepaper. A costume.
DOGE-1: the moon that keeps slipping
9 May 2021, the morning after SNL, Musk tweeted that SpaceX would launch satellite DOGE-1 to the moon the next year, mission paid for in Doge, “1st crypto in space,” “To the mooooonnn!!” The contractor is Geometric Energy Corporation (Samuel Reid). The payload in the FCC experimental program packet is a ~13.8 kg 12U CubeSat: imaging, a claimed distributed-ledger demonstration beyond LEO, and a miniature screen for ads, logos, and images to be photographed and sent home. Payment of the launch contract in Dogecoin is the sentence every recap repeats. The packet is the primary that recaps flatten: Form 442 technical question 6, experimental spectrum, originally manifested as a Falcon 9 lunar rideshare with Intuitive Machines’ IM-1 / Nova-C.
IM-1 flew without it. Dates walked: 2022, 2023, January 2024, a February 2026 note of 13 September 2026, then Q4 2026 listings on IM-3. As of 17 September 2026, Next Spaceflight still files DOGE-1 as a future Falcon 9 payload with Nova-C IM-3, not as a COSPAR object that already went. A few same-week wires claimed a mid-September 2026 liftoff. This site does not. Unflown until a launch library says otherwise.

Fines, puffery, and the case that ended
Readers arrive here looking for a Dogecoin fine. The fine they remember is almost always 29 September 2018: SEC v. Musk, Tesla take-private tweets, $20 million from Musk, $20 million from Tesla, chair surrendered, tweet pre-approval. That case is about Tesla securities. It is not about DOGE. Mixing the two is how Telegram threads get written. This page keeps them in separate drawers.
The Dogecoin case is civil, not an SEC penalty. Keith Johnson filed in the Southern District of New York in June 2022. The docket is 1:22-cv-05037-AKH, later captioned Gorog et al. v. Musk et al., defendants including Tesla and (in the original telling) SpaceX. Plaintiffs described a two-year carnival: tweets, SNL, influencers, wallets they said Musk or Tesla controlled, a 36,000% rise, then a crash, damages theories that ballooned toward $258 billion. They amended four times. They added an insider-trading story around the April 2023 bird-to-dog swap.
On 29 August 2024 Judge Alvin Hellerstein dismissed with prejudice. Reuters and Fortune quoted the two-pager: statements that Dogecoin was the future currency of Earth, that you could buy Teslas with it, that SpaceX would fly it to the moon, were “aspirational and puffery, not factual and susceptible to being falsified.” “No reasonable investor could rely upon them.” The pump-and-dump theory he called impossible to understand. In November 2024 the appeal was withdrawn; both sides dropped sanctions motions; the case ended without a payout. Musk’s lawyers had called the tweets “innocuous and often silly.” The court did not need them to be nice. It needed them not to be securities fraud as pled.
What the founders did with him
Palmer’s 2018 help with bots is the courteous chapter. The 2021 chapter is a one-minute tweet. On or about 13–14 May 2021, after “working with Doge devs” and the SNL hangover, Palmer posted: “Reminder: Elon Musk is and always will be a self-absorbed grifter.” He said he would delete it in a minute. Screenshots survived (news.com.au, Decrypt, Reddit). He had already left crypto. The deletion is part of the record: he did not want a thread, he wanted a stamp.
Markus stayed the dry witness. The Wall Street Journal, February 2021, had him calling the rise “super absurd.” He is not a protocol steward and not Musk’s partner. Later he would call the uncapped tail a leftover bug. Musk would call the same schedule a feature: fixed coin issuance, falling percentage inflation. See Dogecoin for the Core table. Both sentences can sit in one encyclopedia. They are not the same sentence.
2024–2026: a government acronym collides with a ticker
After the 2024 U.S. election Musk was named to a cost-cutting effort branded Department of Government Efficiency — DOGE. Desks printed coin pops on the acronym the way they had printed pops on tweets. Trump-world merch borrowed Shiba art. The official DOGE site briefly wore Kabosu. In December 2024, at a rally, Musk said he was “not actively involved in crypto” and made Dogecoin jokes “because it’s got the best sense of humor and it has dogs and memes.” Decrypt’s September 2025 recap is the wire this page uses for that stretch. He left the government role in 2025 amid a public split with Trump. None of that writes a line of Dogecoin Core. All of it is why newcomers still type his name into this search box.
X Money, Visa, and “everything app” payments chatter through 2025–2026 kept a DOGE-on-X rumor alive. As of this review, X’s published payments story is fiat rails. Eden’s later 𝕏Đ Good micropayments on X, documented on this site under Eden and Doge Soft, are a different builder’s product. Do not collapse them into Musk’s joke.
Continuity, as-of, and what collectors must not do
As of 17 September 2026: Musk is still the most famous living non-founder attached to the coin; the 2021 ATH print still sits near $0.73; the SDNY case is over; Tesla vehicle-for-DOGE is still a tease; DOGE-1 is still a rideshare on a calendar; this encyclopedia is not an indexer and not a broker.
If someone DMs you as Musk, as Tesla support, as “SNL giveaway,” or as a moon-mission whitelist, close the tab. The 2018 problem Palmer’s script attacked never ended; it just changed costumes. Keys stay on your device. Doge Soft is the living L1 stack this site documents. It is not a celebrity.
Questions
Did Elon Musk create Dogecoin?
No. Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer launched it on 6 December 2013. Musk’s first dated public warmth is 2 April 2019.
Was he fined for talking about Dogecoin?
Not in the SEC record this site cites. The 2018 $40 million Tesla/Musk settlement is about take-private tweets. The Dogecoin fight was a civil class action, SDNY 22-cv-05037, dismissed with prejudice on 29 August 2024 and ended in November 2024 without a payout.
What happened to the price on SNL night?
Desks put an all-time high near $0.73 on 8 May 2021, then a drop on the order of 30% during and after the show, including a Robinhood crypto outage. Weekend Update’s “it’s a hustle” line is the quote everyone kept.
Why is the cover Wario?
Because that is the other SNL costume from the same night: Musk in a yellow-and-purple fat-suit on trial for Mario’s murder. He tweeted it was his favourite sketch. The Dogefather bit moved the coin. The mustache moved the memes.
Is DOGE-1 in space?
Not as of 17 September 2026 on the launch lists this page trusts. Announced 9 May 2021, paid in Dogecoin, repeatedly slipped from the IM-1 rideshare. Still filed as a future payload.
