- Apezord
Published the open-source doginals repository in February 2023 and created Shibescription #0. The protocol extensions — multipart payloads, P2SH envelopes, and cross-transaction chaining — are theirs.
- BRC-20
Introduced by Domo in March 2023 on Bitcoin Ordinals. DRC-20 follows the same three operations and the same social-consensus model.
- Cardinals
Appeared around May 2023 with different confirmation and swap ideas. Cardinals inscriptions and Doginals inscriptions are not interchangeable.
- DOGI
Deployed 11 March 2023 with a 21 million max supply in the Apezord/Doge Labs lineage. A later 2.1 billion deploy (often shown as DOGIM) belongs to indexers that start later.
- Doginals
A metaprotocol, pioneered by Apezord in February 2023, for inscribing arbitrary data onto individual shibes of Dogecoin. The on-chain bytes are ordinary Dogecoin transactions; meaning is assigned by indexers and wallets that agree to read them.
- DRC-20
A BRC-20-style experimental token protocol using deploy, mint, and transfer JSON inscribed on Dogecoin. Balances exist only in indexer state machines, not in Dogecoin script.
- Elon / koinu
Indexer literature sometimes says “elons” for the atomic unit when discussing early random block rewards. Wallets more often say koinu. Suchdoginals treats shibe as the ordinal unit and koinu as the monetary unit.
- Envelope
In Ordinals and Doginals, a sequence of pushes beginning with the string ord, then a content type, then the payload. Doginals adds part counts so content can span several pushes or transactions.
- Indexer
Dogecoin nodes validate money. Indexers watch the chain, decode inscription envelopes, number shibes, and compute DRC-20 balances. Different indexers can disagree; markets then pick a lineage.
- Kabosu
A dog belonging to Atsuko Sato in Sakura, Japan. A 2010 photograph became the 2013 Doge meme, then the face of Dogecoin. She died in 2025; the meme outlived the animal, as memes do.
- Metaprotocol
Doginals and DRC-20 do not fork Dogecoin. They overlay extra meaning on valid transactions. If every indexer vanished, the bytes would remain; the token balances would not.
- Ordinals
A scheme for giving each satoshi a serial number from the order it was mined, then attaching inscriptions to those sats. Doginals is the Dogecoin adaptation of that idea.
- P2SH
A 2012 Bitcoin/Dogecoin address type that hides a redeem script behind a hash. Doginals encode inscription push-data in P2SH redeem scripts so content can ride along with a spend.
- PSDT
Dogecoin never gained Bitcoin’s Taproot. Marketplaces that wanted Bitcoin-like inscription sales had to invent a PSBT analogue so two parties could complete a trade without a trusted escrow script.
- Scrypt
Taken from Litecoin. Early Dogecoin could not be mined with Bitcoin SHA-256 ASICs, which shaped who arrived in 2013 and how the chain felt: faster blocks, lighter folklore, heavier inflation.
- Shibe
By analogy with Bitcoin’s satoshi, a shibe is a 1/100,000,000 slice of one DOGE. Dogecoin’s native name for that unit is often koinu. Doginals numbering treats each shibe as uniquely ordered by mining and transfer history.
- Shibescription
The Doginals name for an inscription. Shibescription #0, created 24 February 2023, is treated as the first in the Apezord lineage. Numbering is an indexer convention, not a Dogecoin consensus rule.
- UTXO
Dogecoin, like Bitcoin, tracks coins as unspent outputs rather than account balances. Inscriptions stick to those outputs as they move.
- Wonky-ord
An ord-style explorer associated with Doge Labs / dogeord.io, used as a window onto numbered shibes after the random-reward problem was solved.
Inscription validity is not a consensus rule of Dogecoin. What counts as “the” Doginal or “the” DOGI is whatever wallets, markets, and indexers collectively treat as canonical.
