The Doge meme is an interior monologue pasted, in Comic Sans, over a photograph of Kabosu, a female Shiba Inu belonging to Atsuko Satō of Sakura, Chiba. Dogecoin did not invent the dog. It incorporated her the way a maison incorporates a founder’s initials: until the initials are the product. She died on 24 May 2024. The face on every Dogecoin is still hers.
The animal
Kabosu was not a generic Shiba. She was a rescue. After a puppy mill closed she went to a shelter; a volunteer named her after the citrus fruit kabosu because of her round face. Satō, a kindergarten teacher in Sakura, adopted her in 2008. Satō’s exact-birthday estimate is around 2 November 2005. The 2013 Verge profile is how the English internet first met the owner: she had not set out to brand a currency.
On 13 February 2010 Satō posted ordinary blog photos, including Kabosu on a sofa, paws crossed, giving side-eye. Know Your Meme dates that post. The Verge’s 31 December 2013 identification of Satō as the owner is the journalism that closed the loop. Satō later said she was frightened that one casual blog photo had gone worldwide; locally, almost no one knew the meme.
On 24 May 2024, at 7:50 a.m., Satō wrote that Kabosu had fallen into a deep sleep at home in Sakura, aged about 18, after leukaemia and liver disease. BBC and the blog itself agree on the date. The ticker did not die. The animal did.
On 2 November 2023 — Kabosu’s estimated 18th birthday — Sakura City’s parks office recorded the unveiling of a monument at Sakura Furusato Square, during a fan-organized Doge Day. CoinDesk, 5 October 2023: Own The Doge, with the city, planned a bronze in that park. The city PR is the clerk this page uses for the date and place. Yahoo/ACCESSWIRE’s preview also named the Dogecoin Foundation among collaborating communities. The statue is a civic object in Chiba. It is not a Core parameter.
The word is older than the photo
“Doge” as a misspelling of dog appears on 24 June 2005 in Homestar Runner’s Biz Cas Fri 1, when Homestar letters out “d-o-g-e.” On 28 October 2010 a Reddit post titled “LMBO LOOK @ THIS FUKKIN DOGE” put the word on a corgi, not on Kabosu. Tumblr’s Shiba Confessions later glued Comic Sans inner-monologue text — wow, such, very, much — onto Shiba photographs. By late 2013 Know Your Meme named Doge the year’s top meme. Kabosu’s 2010 sofa shot became the defining still. The genealogy is: a misspelling, a corgi post, a confession blog, then one Japanese kindergarten teacher’s rescue dog.
The 2013 captions are not illiteracy. They are a style: a mind that cannot quite grammar its own astonishment. Palmer put that style on a homepage. Markus put it on a client. Every later seriousness, including this site, is downstream of that typesetting joke.
Why we will not typeset Comic Sans
Suchdoginals records the meme and declines to reenact it. The original page is heritage. A 2026 pastiche would be costume. That is an editorial choice, not a claim that Dogecoin was ever solemn.
